The man instrumental in bringing the WRC to Paraguay for the first time experienced the thrill of Rally1 competition first-hand, riding alongside the eight-time world champion on the 4.92km Trinidad test.
For President Peña, who has personally championed Paraguay’s entry onto rallying’s global stage, it was a dream moment that perfectly encapsulated his country’s historic WRC debut.
“It was amazing, it was defying gravity for someone who’s not used to go as a co-pilot or being in a Rally1 car,””said President Peña after climbing out of Ogier’s Toyota GR Yaris Rally1. “I had one experience a month ago in Finland to be seated next to Tommi Mäkinen, so it was quite interesting as a warm-up for today, but Seb is just amazing.
“He was very, very nice. I was very concerned for him not to slow down,” laughed Peña – showing the competitive spirit that helped drive Paraguay’s successful WRC bid.
Ogier was impressed with his presidential co-driver’s composure in what must have been an intense experience, telling him: “You are a very good co-driver, so it was a pleasure to have you on board.”
The President, who officially unveiled the rally route back in April, was keen to ensure that ueno Rally del Paraguay event showcases his country in the best possible light.
“[This event is] a dream come true for so many local drivers, for so many local fans, so [we are all] very excited and everything is perfect. The weather is incredible, so we are hoping that this continues the rest of the weekend and everybody behaves. Safety is the most important thing,” he emphasised.
President Peña’s high-speed adventure comes amid a busy period for Paraguay’s leader, who is concurrently hosting FIA President Mohammed Ben Sulayem for the annual FIA American Congress in Asunción. Both presidents will be on hand to oversee tonight’s ceremonial start in the Encarnación-based service park.
